this picture kind of embodies, in one photograph, what i love and hate about fashion (perhaps specifically fashion photography/styling… or perhaps the entire industry, i’m not quite sure yet).
my first instinct, upon seeing it, is “oooh, beautiful.” slowly, my brain picks apart the pieces. beautiful thin mixed race model (what is her name? i always want to know more about the models). her gorgeous freckles. gold sequins. big jewelry. natural yet bold makeup, amazing almost forties inspired hair. but then… i start getting confused. yeah, sure the rabbit is cute but what’s the deal? eastern european style hankerchief headcovering thing? or is it just going to be listed as “prada” or “stylists’ own.” what’s the deal… what is the point of this photo? what is it trying to tell me? is it trying to evoke a sort of peasantry, woman going to the market and picking up her dinner?
is it just about composition, or is the photographer or stylist or magazine trying to sell me a story, a fantasy? is it just supposed to be “pretty”?
(sometimes it feels like) i overthink everything.
They’re good points, though! I go between just accepting things as pretty and then also wondering about intentions, etc. The rabbit *is* very confusing…
